According to an announcement made last month by DAIKIN, in collaboration with the National Instutite of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), Vietnam, the company demonstrated that it's powerful streamer discharge technology can completely decompose / remove the highly viruently type of A H5N1 bird flu virus in three hours' time, a world's first.

A public announcement in japan of the content and results of the research as well as a demonstration are scheduled for July 2nd and will be attended by Dr. Mai of the NIHE.

A type of plasma discharge the 'streamer discharge' technology DAIKIN developed in 2004 is an innovative air purifying technology which can stably generate high-speed electrons, which had so far proven difficult. With an oxygen decomposing ability more than 1,000 times greater than ordinary plasma discharge (glow discharge) technology, DAIKIN's streamer discharge technology can continuously remove odors, germs and room air pollutants such as formaldehyde.

It has already been proven that the streamer discharge technology could effectively deactivate harmful substances such as less virulent flu viruses ( such as type A H1N1 ), noroviruses, toxins and bacteria that cause food poisoning.

In the research demonstration, the TCID 50 test for measuring the extent to which the amount of viruses has decreased and the CPE test for measuring the extent to which cells have denatured, or lost their structure, after being cultured were employed. While 100% of the bird flu virus stays alive when not exposed to the streamer discharge, it was reported that when exposed to the streamer discharge, about 97% of the bird flu virus was decomposed / removed after an hour, about 99.8% after two hours and 100% after three hours.

DAIKIN's streamer discharge is adopted in the company's three homeuse air purifier models and available as an optional unit for packaged air conditioners.
